27 MAY 2026

In the span of just 15 years under Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress (TMC) rule (2011–2026), West Bengal underwent significant demographic, political, and social shifts. What began as a promise of “Poriborton” (change) gradually gave way to allegations of minority appeasement, unchecked infiltration, and systemic corruption.

By May 2026, voters delivered a decisive verdict, bringing the BJP to power with a massive mandate. Suvendu Adhikari, a former TMC heavyweight turned fierce rival, was sworn in as the state’s first BJP Chief Minister on May 9, 2026, marking a historic political reset.

Muslim decadal growth was markedly higher: 21.8% (2001–2011) compared to Hindus at 10.8%.

Higher fertility rates and alleged cross-border migration from Bangladesh contributed to this shift. By 2026, the Muslim share is estimated to have crossed 29–30% in the state, with sharper increases in border districts.

TMC Era: Corruption, Crime, and Appeasement Allegations

Under Mamata Banerjee’s rule, TMC faced repeated accusations of protecting corrupt and criminal leaders, many from the Muslim community, in exchange for vote-bank loyalty. Major scandals that rocked the state include:

  • RG Kar Hospital Rape-Murder Case (2024): The brutal rape and murder of a 31-year-old postgraduate trainee doctor inside RG Kar Medical College and Hospital sparked nationwide outrage. Allegations of evidence tampering, delayed justice, and attempts to shield influential people close to the establishment led to massive protests and severe criticism of the TMC government for failing to ensure safety for women, even within hospital premises.
  • Sandeshkhali Scandal (2024): TMC leader Sheikh Shahjahan and his associates faced serious charges of land grab, sexual assault, and systematic exploitation of women. The case exposed how local TMC strongmen allegedly operated with political protection.
  • Ration Scam / PDS Scam: Former ministers and TMC functionaries were arrested for allegedly diverting thousands of crores in public distribution funds.
  • Teachers’ Recruitment Scam & Narada Sting: Hundreds of crores were siphoned off in job-for-cash rackets, with several TMC leaders and ministers implicated.
  • Ponzi Schemes (Saradha, Rose Valley): Lakhs of people were duped, with accusations of TMC patronage.

Critics argued that TMC’s heavy reliance on consolidated Muslim votes led to soft-pedalling on infiltration, law-and-order failures, and protection of powerful local leaders.

Post-2026 elections, many TMC Muslim leaders faced public resentment in Hindu-majority areas over perceived appeasement politics.

The New BJP Order Under CM Suvendu Adhikari

Suvendu Adhikari has hit the ground running with a strong administrative and nationalist approach. His government’s flagship “Detect, Detain & Deport” policy targets illegal immigrants, with detention centres being rapidly operationalised across districts, especially in border regions.Adhikari’s style combines grassroots aggression with development focus — ending “cut money” culture, cleaning voter lists, improving law and order, and strict border management.West Bengal stands at a crossroads.

The demographic changes of the past 15 years played a major role in shaping the 2026 verdict. The new government’s success will depend on balancing strict enforcement of laws with inclusive development and social harmony. The coming years will determine whether Bengal can reverse decades of perceived decline and emerge stronger.
