Intense thunderstorms accompanied by heavy rain, strong winds, and hail lashed parts of Bengaluru on Wednesday evening (April 29). The sudden downpour turned deadly when a compound wall near the historic Bowring and Lady Curzon Medical College and Research Institute (Bowring Hospital) in Shivajinagar collapsed, killing seven people and injuring several others.
With two additional deaths due to electrocution in separate incidents, the total rain-related deaths in the city rose to nine.
The wall collapse happened around 5:30–6:00 PM. Roadside vendors, pedestrians, and others had taken shelter along the approximately eight-foot-high compound wall to escape the heavy rain and hail.
The structure suddenly gave way, burying several people under the debris. Fire and emergency services teams immediately rushed to the spot and carried out rescue operations.

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah visited the site, ordered a detailed investigation into the collapse, and announced Rs 5 lakh ex-gratia compensation for the families of the deceased.
