Bengaluru, April 30, 2026

Intense thunderstorms accompanied by heavy rain, strong winds, and hail lashed parts of Bengaluru on Wednesday evening (April 29). The sudden downpour turned deadly when a compound wall near the historic Bowring and Lady Curzon Medical College and Research Institute (Bowring Hospital) in Shivajinagar collapsed, killing seven people and injuring several others.

With two additional deaths due to electrocution in separate incidents, the total rain-related deaths in the city rose to nine.

The wall collapse happened around 5:30–6:00 PM. Roadside vendors, pedestrians, and others had taken shelter along the approximately eight-foot-high compound wall to escape the heavy rain and hail.

The structure suddenly gave way, burying several people under the debris. Fire and emergency services teams immediately rushed to the spot and carried out rescue operations.

Notes: The victims included a 6-year-old girl, two women from Kerala who were part of a leisure group from Ernakulam, and several local roadside vendors and daily earners. Some reports mention two children among the deceased.

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah visited the site, ordered a detailed investigation into the collapse, and announced Rs 5 lakh ex-gratia compensation for the families of the deceased.

Deputy CM DK Shivakumar also reached the spot to assess the situation.

Broader Impact of the Rain and Hailstorm:

  • Heavy rains caused severe waterlogging in many low-lying areas, disrupting traffic and daily life.
  • Strong winds and hail added to the damage, affecting vehicles and property in several pockets.
  • Apart from the 7 deaths in the wall collapse, two people lost their lives due to electrocution, bringing the total rain-related fatalities to 9.

This incident once again highlights the vulnerability of urban infrastructure in Bengaluru, especially old compound walls, during extreme weather events. It also points to the need for better maintenance of public structures and improved preparedness for sudden thunderstorms and hail.

Government and Public Response:

  • Rescue teams worked through the night to clear debris and shift the injured to nearby hospitals, including Bowring Hospital.
  • There are growing demands for structural safety audits of public buildings and better early warning systems for extreme weather.
  • Citizens expressed grief and shared images of the hailstorm and flooded streets on social media.

Our deepest condolences to all the families who lost their loved ones in this tragedy.

May the departed souls rest in peace.Note: Information compiled from multiple news sources as of April 30, 2026.
