26 Jan 2026

India’s Republic Day 2026 marked a vibrant celebration of the nation’s 77th year as a republic, blending tradition, unity, and forward-looking ambitions. Held on January 26, this annual event commemorates the adoption of the Indian Constitution in 1950, symbolizing democracy, justice, liberty, equality, and fraternity.

Amidst colorful parades, cultural displays, and high-level diplomatic engagements, the day highlighted India’s progress in self-reliance, economic growth, and global partnerships. As the theme “150 Years of Vande Mataram” echoed through the festivities, millions across the country and worldwide tuned in to witness a spectacle of national pride.

Grand Celebrations Across the Nation

The center piece of Republic Day 2026 was the iconic parade at Kartavya Path in New Delhi, showcasing India’s military strength, cultural diversity, and technological innovations.

The event featured 30 tableaux from various states, union territories, and central ministries, each emphasizing themes like self-reliance under “Aatmanirbhar Bharat” and the spirit of freedom.

A breathtaking flypast by the Indian Air Force, including Rafale jets, Su-30 fighters, and Apache helicopters, thrilled spectators and symbolized the nation’s defense capabilities.

Beyond Delhi, celebrations rippled nationwide with flag-hoisting ceremonies, cultural programs, and community events. Special inclusivity efforts included inviting 400 tribal representatives, underscoring India’s commitment to diversity.

Global leaders, including U.S. President Donald Trump, extended warm wishes, highlighting the strong bonds between democracies.

Historic Chief Guests: Strengthening India-EU Ties

In a first for Republic Day, India hosted two chief guests: António Costa, President of the European Council, and Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission.

Their presence spotlighted the deepening strategic and economic partnerships between India and the European Union, particularly amid ongoing free trade agreement negotiations. This choice reflected India’s pivot toward enhanced global collaborations, fostering mutual growth in trade, technology, and sustainability.

Government Declarations: Unity, Security, and Development

On the eve of Republic Day, President Droupadi Murmu delivered an inspiring address, praising the Constitution’s enduring spirit and invoking Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose’s “Jai Hind” as a beacon of national pride. She commended the armed forces’ valor and announced initiatives for tribal welfare and cultural preservation. Special remissions for eligible prisoners in Delhi added a humanitarian touch.Prime Minister Narendra Modi complemented these messages through his communications, emphasizing constitutional values and the vision of a “Viksit Bharat” (Developed India).

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Address to the Nation

While Republic Day traditionally features the President’s speech, Prime Minister Narendra Modi shared his reflections via the 130th episode of Mann Ki Baat on January 25, 2026, and through social media posts on the day itself. In Mann Ki Baat, he greeted the nation and tied the occasion to democratic foundations:

“Greetings, my dear countrymen.

This is the first Mann Ki Baat of 2026. Tomorrow, 26 January, we will celebrate Republic Day, the day our Constitution came into force and strengthened our democratic foundations. Republic Day gives us an opportunity to pay tribute to the makers of our Constitution.

Today, 25th January, is also very significant—it is National Voters’ Day. Voters are the very soul of democracy… Just like we convey our best wishes on birthdays and celebrate them, similarly, whenever a young person becomes a voter for the first time, the entire neighbourhood, village or city should come together and congratulate him and distribute sweets. This will increase awareness about voting among people. This will further strengthen the feeling of how important it is to be a voter.”

On January 26, Modi extended greetings: “Best wishes on Republic Day. May this occasion add renewed energy and enthusiasm in our collective resolve to build a Viksit Bharat.”

He shared parade highlights, stating: “Here are the highlights from the Republic Day celebrations 2026. May we always keep strengthening Constitutional values and realise the dream of a Viksit Bharat.”

Praising the President’s address, he noted: “On the eve of Republic Day, Rashtrapati Ji gave a very inspiring address. She has correctly emphasised the uniqueness of our Constitution and appreciated the collective spirit that has taken our nation forward. Her address motivates every citizen to reaffirm their commitment to strengthening democracy, upholding constitutional ideals and building a Viksit Bharat.”

Modi also highlighted the chief guests: “India is privileged to host European Council President António Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen during our Republic Day celebrations. Their presence underscores the growing strength of the India-European Union partnership and our commitment to shared values.”

These messages reinforced themes of unity, self-reliance, military prowess, cultural pride, and global ties, urging citizens to contribute to India’s democratic and developmental journey.

The Cost of Republic Day Celebrations

The grandeur of Republic Day comes at a notable expense, essential for promoting national unity and soft power.

Historical trends show budgets rising from modest figures in the 1970s to around ₹300-500 crore today, covering logistics, security, tableaux, and the parade.

Public ticket sales, priced between ₹20 and ₹100, contribute minimally, but the investment is viewed as vital for inspiring patriotism and showcasing India’s capabilities.

India’s Economic Status in 2026: Resilience and Growth

As the nation celebrated, India’s economy demonstrated steady progress amid global challenges. Projected GDP growth for fiscal year 2025-26 stands at 7.4%, driven by strong domestic consumption, infrastructure investments, and manufacturing. Inflation has eased to 1.33%, offering relief to households, while the unemployment rate hovers at 4.8%.

The central bank has revised growth forecasts to 7.3%, supported by vibrant private sector activity. Per capita GDP has surpassed $3,000, positioning India as one of the world’s fastest-growing major economies. However, ongoing issues like job creation and trade tensions require continued focus.

Population Dynamics in India’s Major Metros

Urban centers remain engines of India’s economic and cultural growth, with rapid urbanization drawing migrants seeking opportunities.

Here are the estimated 2026 populations for key metropolitan cities:

Metro CityEstimated Population (2026)
Delhi35,518,400
Mumbai22,539,300
Kolkata16,151,400
Bangalore14,771,700
Chennai12,623,100
Hyderabad11,608,400
Ahmedabad9,272,670

This growth underscores the need for sustainable urban planning to address infrastructure strains.

Key Policy Focus: India-EU Free Trade Agreement and Its Public Impact

A highlight of Republic Day 2026 was the emphasis on the India-EU Free Trade Agreement (FTA), with the chief guests’ presence signaling potential breakthroughs. This policy aims to eliminate tariffs on over 90% of goods, expand services trade, and boost investments across sectors like automobiles, pharmaceuticals, textiles, and digital services.

It includes provisions for sustainable development, labor rights, and environmental standards, aligning with “Make in India.”For the public, the FTA promises significant benefits: creating 8-10 million jobs in export sectors, reducing consumer costs through lower tariffs on imports, and enhancing rural incomes via technology access for farmers and small businesses.

While challenges like increased competition and compliance costs exist, the agreement supports India’s green ambitions, such as net-zero by 2070, and reinforces economic sovereignty.Republic Day 2026 not only honored India’s democratic legacy but also charted a path toward prosperity, inclusivity, and global integration. As Prime Minister Modi urged, let this occasion fuel our collective drive for a “Viksit Bharat.” Jai Hind!
