In a deeply disturbing incident that has sent shockwaves across Maharashtra, a 30-year-old woman from Navi Mumbai’s Kalamboli area has been arrested for allegedly strangling her six-year-old daughter. Police officials revealed that the mother confessed to the crime, citing her longstanding desire for a son and frustration over having a girl child as key motives.

The tragic event unfolded on December 23, 2025, at the family’s residence in Gurusankalp Housing Society, Sector-1, Kalamboli. The woman, a science graduate married to an IT engineer since 2017, initially tried to pass off the death as a sudden heart attack or illness. The child’s father rushed the unresponsive girl to a hospital, where doctors declared her brought dead.

How the Crime Came to Light

Suspicion arose when hospital staff and police noticed inconsistencies in the mother’s account. Kalamboli police ordered a detailed post-mortem, which revealed clear signs of asphyxiation due to strangulation or smothering—blocking the nose and mouth, with pressure applied to the abdomen. After nearly six hours of intense interrogation on December 26-27, the woman broke down and confessed. She admitted to killing her daughter because she “wanted a son” and had been unhappy since the child’s birth in 2019.

The husband had reportedly tried multiple times to reason with her, but she remained adamant about not wanting a second child unless it was a boy.

Additional Factors: Speech Issues and Mental Health

Investigators noted that the mother was undergoing psychiatric treatment for depression and other issues. She had repeatedly expressed resentment toward the child, complaining that the girl had speech difficulties from a young age, spoke unclearly, and primarily used Hindi instead of Marathi. “I don’t want such a child; she doesn’t speak properly,” she allegedly told her husband on several occasions.Police also uncovered that the woman had attempted to harm the child in the past, highlighting a pattern of emotional distress and gender bias.

Broader Implications: Lingering Gender Bias in Modern India

This heart-wrenching case underscores the persistent issue of son preference in parts of Indian society, despite progress in education and urbanization. The accused, an educated homemaker in a metropolitan area like Navi Mumbai, highlights how deep-rooted patriarchal mindsets can manifest tragically, often intertwined with mental health challenges.Experts point out that while female foeticide has declined due to laws like the PCPNDT Act, post-birth discrimination and infanticide remain concerns in isolated cases.

Mental health support for new mothers, coupled with awareness campaigns against gender bias, is crucial to prevent such horrors.A local court has remanded the woman to police custody until December 30, 2025, as the investigation continues.

The case has sparked widespread outrage online, with calls for stronger psychological support systems for families. This incident serves as a grim reminder: No child should pay the ultimate price for societal prejudices. Rest in peace, little one.
