Marqv Neves – Author, Ghostwriter, Publisher, Lawyer, and Researcher in Sustainability and Ethics

Marqv Neves is a writer and legal researcher focused on the intersection of storytelling, environmental law, and interspecies ethics. A recent graduate of the Master’s in Sustainable Development program at the University of Sussex, his work explores how creative fiction can be used as a tool to foster empathy and drive meaningful conversations about our planet’s future.

Core Work & Philosophy

At the center of his work is the initiative he founded, “CAN FICTION HELP US THRIVE.” This is a platform and a guiding question for sharing creative works, from fiction to podcasts, that challenge conventional thinking on sustainability. The project is rooted in the idea that narrative can reach audiences in a way academic papers cannot, making ethical problems feel immediate and personal.

His novella, “The Jacksons’ Debate,” exemplifies this approach. Published in the peer-reviewed journal Vernacular: New Connections in Language, Literature, & Culture, the story uses science fiction to mirror humanity’s own treatment of non-human animals, asking readers to confront the ease with which a more powerful group can define a less powerful one as a “resource.”

Research and Advocacy

Mr. Neves’ creative work is informed by his academic and legal background. His research into orangutan conservation in Borneo, for example, revealed how direct human-wildlife conflict — driven by market failures and gaps in legal awareness — is a primary driver of population decline. This hands-on analysis of a real-world problem directly fuels the ethical dilemmas explored in his writing.

He actively engages in the broader academic and advocacy communities. In July 2025, he was an invited speaker at the PHAIR Conference at the University of Edinburgh, where he presented on the role of fiction in advancing animal ethics alongside leading researchers in psychology and ethics.

Recognition and Collaborations

His approach has earned early and significant recognition. For 2024–2025, he was selected as a BeVisioneers Mercedes-Benz Fellow, an honor awarded to 500 young people worldwide for their work on impactful projects.

True to the open-minded spirit of his work, Mr. Neves is a keen collaborator, actively building a community of dialogue around these topics. He engages with figures like Jamie Whoodhouse, Billie Groom, Barbara Williams, Sabine Brels, Christopher Berry and features other creators on his platform, believing that progress comes from a shared exploration of new ideas.
