The incident has once again highlighted the dangerous levels of aggression on Indian roads.
What Happened?
The incident took place on Friday afternoon near the Hesaraghatta Grassland in Bengaluru Rural district. Rachana was driving her Range Rover back from her farmhouse after delivering food to her husband Bharat.
She encountered an Ertiga car parked across the narrow road with its door open, completely blocking her path. When she honked politely for them to make way, one of the men approached her vehicle and asked her to lower the window. They allegedly became hostile, issuing threats. Though they eventually moved their vehicle, they blocked her again just 500 metres ahead. Two men got out and surrounded her Range Rover. One reportedly threatened to smash the window. By then, Bharat had arrived. When he asked the men to delete the photos of his wife, they pushed him to the ground and assaulted him.

One of them allegedly picked up a stone to hit him on the head.Rachana’s relatives reached the spot soon after and helped rescue Bharat. The couple alleged that the men were under the influence of alcohol and used vulgar abuse during the confrontation.
The accused have been identified as Mahesh and Govindaraju. A case has been registered and police investigation is underway. Rachana is the daughter-in-law of a former deputy mayor of Bengaluru.
What Can Citizens Do in Such Scenarios?
Road rage incidents like this are becoming increasingly common. Here’s what you can do to protect yourself and de-escalate safely:
- Stay Calm and Secure Your Vehicle: Keep windows up and doors locked. Do not open the door or get out unless absolutely necessary. Avoid honking aggressively or engaging in arguments.
- Record Evidence Discreetly: Use your phone or dashcam to record video and audio if it is safe to do so. Note down the other vehicle’s registration number, colour, make, and description of the people involved.
- Call for Help Immediately: Dial 112 (emergency) or 100 (police) right away. Share your live location. If possible, inform family members or friends simultaneously.
- Drive to Safety: If the aggressors move aside, drive away calmly to a crowded area, police station, or well-lit public place. Do not stop in an isolated stretch.
- Avoid Confrontation: Never try to physically challenge or argue with people who appear intoxicated or aggressive, especially if you are outnumbered. Your safety and your family’s safety come first.
- After the Incident:
- Seek medical help if injured.
- File an FIR at the nearest police station immediately. Provide all evidence (videos, photos, witness details).
- Approach senior police officers or use citizen grievance portals if the local station delays action.
- Consider installing high-quality dashcams (front and rear) in your vehicle for future protection.
- Long-term Prevention: Support demands for stricter enforcement of traffic rules, installation of more CCTV on city outskirts, and stricter action against drunk driving. Participate in or promote road safety awareness campaigns.
This incident serves as a wake-up call for both citizens and authorities.
While we wait for swift justice in this case, staying vigilant and prepared is the best defence against such unpredictable road rage episodes.
Stay safe on the roads.
