In a shocking turn of events that has left the Indian entertainment industry and fans heartbroken, Prashant Tamang, the beloved winner of Indian Idol Season 3 (2007) and acclaimed singer-actor, has died at the age of 43. The news emerged on January 11, 2026, with reports confirming his sudden passing at his residence in New Delhi’s Janakpuri area.
The Circumstances of His Death
Tamang was found unresponsive at home early Sunday morning.
He was rushed to Mata Chanan Devi Hospital in Janakpuri, where doctors declared him brought dead around 3:10 PM (as per the Medico-Legal Case registered by Delhi Police).

Born on January 4, 1983, in Darjeeling, West Bengal, into a Nepali-speaking Gorkha family, Tamang faced early hardship after his father’s death in service with the West Bengal Police.
He dropped out of school to join the Kolkata Police as a constable, where he sang in the police orchestra—nurturing the talent that would soon change his life.In 2007, while still a constable, Tamang auditioned for Indian Idol Season 3.

His soulful voice and humble story captured the nation’s heart, leading to an overwhelming victory with massive voter support (reportedly over 70 million votes), especially from the Gorkha, Nepali-speaking communities in Darjeeling, Sikkim, Nepal, and beyond. His win became a cultural milestone, inspiring pride and unity.Post-Indian Idol, Tamang released his debut album Dhanyavad (with Hindi and Nepali tracks) and performed worldwide. He also ventured into acting, starring in Nepali films like Gorkha Paltan (2010) and gaining praise for his intense role in Paatal Lok Season 2. He had recently shot for Salman Khan’s upcoming film Battle of Galwan (slated for April 2026 release).
