In a heartbreaking announcement, Vedanta Group Chairman Anil Agarwal shared the tragic news of his son Agnivesh Agarwal’s sudden demise on January 7, 2026. The 49-year-old passed away due to a cardiac arrest while recovering from injuries sustained in a skiing accident in the United States.Anil Agarwal, in an emotional post on social media platform X, described the day as “the darkest day of my life.” He wrote:

“My beloved son, Agnivesh, left us far too soon. He was just 49 years old, healthy, full of life, and dreams. Following a skiing accident in the US, he was recovering well in Mount Sinai Hospital, New York. We believed the worst was behind us. But fate had other plans, and a sudden cardiac arrest snatched our son away from us.”

The Vedanta chairman expressed profound grief, stating, “No words can describe the pain of a parent who must bid goodbye to his child. A son is not meant to leave before his father. This loss has shattered us in ways we are still trying to comprehend.”

Who Was Agnivesh Agarwal?

Born on June 3, 1976, in Patna, Bihar, Agnivesh grew up in a middle-class family and studied at Mayo College in Ajmer. He later established Fujairah Gold FZE, a precious metals refinery in the UAE, and served as Chairman of Hindustan Zinc Limited from 2005 to 2019. He was also the Chairperson of Talwandi Sabo Power Limited, a Vedanta subsidiary, and held board positions in several group companies.

Despite his professional accomplishments, Agnivesh was known for his humility. His father described him as a sportsman, musician, leader, and a “simple, warm, and deeply human” individual who was a loyal friend and protective brother.Anil Agarwal shared that Agnivesh was deeply committed to a self-reliant India and social causes, including eliminating child hunger, ensuring education for all, empowering women, and creating meaningful employment for youth. Renewing a shared pledge, the senior Agarwal committed to dedicating over 75% of the group’s earnings to societal initiatives.

Tributes Pour In

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences, stating: “The untimely passing of Shri Agnivesh Agarwal is deeply shocking and saddening. The depth of your grief is evident in this touching tribute. Praying that you and your family find continued strength and courage. Om Shanti.”Condolences also came from industry leaders and public figures, reflecting the widespread impact of this loss.Anil Agarwal concluded his tribute with heartfelt words: “Beta, you will live on in our hearts, in our work, and in every life you touched.”The Agarwal family, including wife Kiran and daughter Priya (who serves on the Vedanta board), is mourning the irreplaceable void left by Agnivesh.
