In the early hours of Monday, a 5.1 magnitude earthquake struck central Assam, sending shockwaves through the region and jolting residents awake at 4:17 AM IST.

The epicenter was located in Morigaon district, along the Kopili fault line, at a depth of 50 km. Tremors rippled across Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, parts of Arunachal Pradesh, northern West Bengal, and even neighboring countries like Bhutan, China, and Bangladesh. While the quake was moderate in intensity, it triggered widespread panic as people rushed out of their homes in the dark. Initial reports suggested no casualties or significant damage, but as the day progressed, authorities confirmed minor injuries and isolated property issues.

The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) quickly mobilized teams to assess the situation, urging calm and preparedness for potential aftershocks.

Injuries and Human Impact

In the chaos of evacuation, a handful of residents sustained injuries. Reports indicate at least two to three people were hurt, primarily from falls or head injuries while fleeing their residences. Among them:

  • Joymoti Dewri, an 80-year-old woman from Na Dalbori village in Morigaon, suffered a head injury and was admitted to Morigaon Civil Hospital.
  • Manoj Kumar (also referred to as Neeraj Kumar in some accounts) was also hospitalized with similar injuries.
  • A third individual was reported injured in later updates, though details remain limited.

All injured parties are in stable condition and receiving treatment. Fortunately, there have been no fatalities reported from the incident.

Damage Assessment: Minimal but a Wake-Up Call

Damage appears limited, with no widespread destruction or collapse of structures. Officials noted minor cracks in walls of several houses in Morigaon and bordering areas of Nagaon district. Partial damage was also reported to a school building and a temple gate in the affected districts. No major infrastructure—such as roads, bridges, power grids, or hospitals—was impacted, and essential services remain operational.

The ASDMA emphasized that while the quake caused no major property loss, it serves as a reminder of Assam’s seismic vulnerability. The state lies in Seismic Zone V, one of India’s highest-risk areas for earthquakes. “When the earth shakes, only solid infrastructure and quick response save lives.”

Social Media Buzz and Public Reaction

The earthquake quickly trended on social media, with #AssamEarthquake garnering thousands of posts as residents shared their experiences. “A major wake-up call for the Northeast!” captured the sentiment of many who felt the tremors from Guwahati to Shillong. Users echoed reports of the injuries, while others expressed relief over the lack of severe damage.Local authorities have advised residents to avoid spreading rumors and to follow official updates.

Disaster response teams are on standby, and no aftershocks have been reported as of now.

This event underscores the importance of earthquake-resistant building practices in the region. As investigations continue, experts are monitoring for any geological aftereffects.

Stay tuned for updates.
