Los Angeles, CA – December 24, 2025
In a heartbreaking loss for the video game industry, Vince Zampella – the co-creator of the blockbuster Call of Duty franchise and co-founder of Infinity Ward and Respawn Entertainment – has tragically passed away at the age of 55. Zampella died on Sunday, December 21, when the red Ferrari 296 GTS he was driving veered off Angeles Crest Highway, slammed into a concrete barrier, and erupted into flames.
A passenger was also killed in the single-car accident. The crash occurred around 12:45 p.m. local time on the winding mountain road north of Los Angeles, a notorious stretch known for its dangers. Preliminary investigations point to high speed as a factor, though the exact cause remains under review. Electronic Arts (EA), parent company of Respawn where Zampella served as General Manager, confirmed the news, calling him a “pioneering force” in gaming.

A Visionary Who Redefined FPS Gaming
Zampella wasn’t just a developer – he was a revolutionary. In 1996, he co-founded Infinity Ward, pitching the bold idea of Call of Duty to Activision: a WWII shooter rivaling Medal of Honor but with unprecedented cinematic storytelling and multiplayer mayhem.
The 2003 launch exploded onto the scene, selling millions and setting the stage for the Modern Warfare trilogy – games that introduced killstreaks, prestige systems, and tactical depth that billions of players still chase today.
Modern Warfare 2 (2009) alone shattered records, becoming one of the best-selling games ever with over 25 million copies.
Zampella’s vision turned CoD into a cultural juggernaut, grossing over $30 billion lifetime and dominating esports.Fired from Infinity Ward in 2010 amid drama with Activision, Zampella didn’t miss a beat.

He co-founded Respawn Entertainment, birthing Titanfall (2014) – a fluid, wall-running masterpiece – and Apex Legends (2019), the free-to-play battle royale that amassed 100 million players in months. Star Wars Jedi titles followed, cementing his legacy.”Vince was a soldier in all of us,” echoed fans, nodding to CoD’s iconic tagline. The gaming community mourned widely, with posts highlighting him as the creator best known for Modern Warfare.
Tributes Pour In: “The Industry Lost a Titan”
Social media erupted with grief. “RIP Vince Zampella… MW2 & MW3 2 of the best games of all time,” captured the nostalgia wave. Others called it an “absolute tragedy,” while gamers lamented: “If you’ve played a shooter in the last 20 years, you played his work.”Respawn and EA vowed to honor him, with whispers of in-game tributes in upcoming CoD and Apex titles. Activision, despite past tensions, acknowledged his “formative” role.Zampella leaves behind a wife and family, remembered as a man driven by passion, not just profit.

Legacy That Lives On
At 55, Zampella’s flame burned bright but brief – much like the Ferrari that claimed him. The gaming world is dimmer, but his games? Immortal.Rest in peace, Vince.
