A spectacular and rare volcanic eruption in Ethiopia’s remote Danakil Depression has sent an enormous ash cloud racing across the Indian Ocean, and it is now confirmed to arrive over western and northern India tonight.
The long-dormant Hayli Gubbi volcano, silent for nearly 10,000 years, exploded on November 23, hurling ash and sulfur dioxide more than 15–20 km into the atmosphere.
High-altitude winds are pushing the plume directly toward the subcontinent at speeds exceeding 100 km/h.

By 10 PM tonight, the leading edge of the cloud will begin covering parts of Gujarat, followed quickly by Rajasthan and the Delhi-NCR region.
Air quality is expected to deteriorate sharply, visibility will drop, and dozens of flights have already been cancelled or diverted.
Timeline of the Ash Cloud Over India Tonight
- 6–8 PM: First traces reach southern and central Gujarat (Ahmedabad, Surat, Vadodara)
- 8–10 PM: Cloud thickens over Saurashtra, Kutch, and northern Gujarat
- 10 PM onward: Core plume blankets Rajasthan (Jaipur, Jodhpur, Udaipur) and enters Delhi-NCR
- Midnight–early morning Nov 26: Spreads into Haryana, Punjab, western Uttar Pradesh
The India Meteorological Department and international satellite tracking confirm the plume will remain aloft for several days, gradually thinning but still capable of causing hazy skies and poor air quality through the week.

Flight Chaos Already Underway
Major airlines including IndiGo, Air India, Vistara, and Akasa Air have cancelled or rerouted more than 70 domestic and international flights. Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport has imposed restrictions on departures and arrivals until at least 4 AM tomorrow.
Volcanic ash is extremely dangerous for aircraft engines—it can melt inside turbines and cause total engine failure.Travelers are advised to check live status on airline apps and consider trains or rescheduling until the plume clears.
Health & Safety Precautions You Must Take Tonight
Volcanic ash consists of tiny jagged glass particles that irritate eyes, skin, and lungs. People with asthma, bronchitis, or heart conditions are at highest risk.Immediate steps to protect yourself:
- Stay indoors with windows and doors sealed
- Use N95 or better masks if you must go outside
- Run air purifiers on high and keep AC on recirculation mode
- Avoid unnecessary travel, especially on two-wheelers
- Rinse eyes and skin with clean water if exposed
- Keep pets indoors and cover water sources
Children and the elderly should remain inside as much as possible for the next 48 hours.

Why This Matters
This is one of the rarest trans-continental ash events to affect India in recorded history. While there is no danger of lava or earthquakes here, the fine ash can damage electronics, clog vehicle air filters, contaminate water bodies, and trigger respiratory emergencies across multiple states.
