In a shocking turn of events that has sent shockwaves through the heart of India’s capital, a massive explosion in a parked Hyundai i20 car near the iconic Red Fort – or Lal Qila – has claimed at least eight lives and injured over 20 others.

The blast, which occurred just before 7 PM local time outside Gate No. 1 of the Lal Quila Metro Station, ignited a chain reaction of fires that engulfed nearby vehicles and auto-rickshaws, turning a bustling evening commute into a scene of pandemonium.

Eyewitnesses described a deafening roar followed by billowing flames and shattered glass. “We heard a big sound – our windows shook violently,” one local resident told NDTV, capturing the raw terror that gripped Old Delhi’s crowded streets.

Another, Rajdhar Pandey, recounted seeing a severed hand on the road amid the debris, a grim testament to the explosion’s ferocity.

The historic 17th-century Mughal fortress, a UNESCO World Heritage site and symbol of India’s independence where Prime Minister Narendra Modi addresses the nation annually on August 15, now stands as a somber backdrop to this tragedy.

What We Know So Far

The incident unfolded at approximately 6:52 PM when the white Hyundai i20, reportedly carrying three passengers, erupted in a fireball. Delhi Fire Services received the distress call at 6:55 PM and dispatched seven fire tenders, which battled the blaze for over an hour. At least six cars and three auto-rickshaws were damaged in the secondary fires, according to Deputy Chief Fire Officer AK Malik.

Casualties mounted quickly: Eight confirmed dead, including the car’s occupants, with 24 injured – many critically, suffering burns and shrapnel wounds.

Over 30 patients flooded Lok Nayak Hospital, where doctors described the scene as “overwhelming.” “Many are not in a position to recover,” said Dr. Manish Kumar Jha, underscoring the blast’s devastating impact.Delhi Police have detained the car’s owner for questioning, and two additional individuals are under interrogation. Sniffer dogs and forensics teams from the National Investigation Agency (NIA), National Security Guard (NSG), and Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) swarmed the cordoned-off site. Surveillance footage from the area is being scoured, but the cause remains unclear – possibilities ranging from a mechanical failure to an improvised explosive device are on the table.

“We are investigating from every angle; no possibility is being ruled out,” Union Home Minister Amit Shah declared upon arriving at the scene, flanked by Delhi Police Commissioner Satish Golcha.

A City – and Nation – Reels

The explosion has triggered a nationwide security scramble. High alerts were sounded in Delhi, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Mumbai, and even Karnataka and Telangana. Haryana’s government directed border districts to heighten vigilance, while Uttar Pradesh bolstered patrols in crowded markets. “Delhi was the first to be put on alert,” reported officials, evoking memories of 1980s and 1990s bombings blamed on Islamist militants or Sikh separatists.Prime Minister Narendra Modi, visibly shaken, extended condolences in a late-evening statement: “Condolences to those who have lost their loved ones… May the injured recover at the earliest.

Those affected are being assisted by authorities.” He reviewed the crisis with Shah and top officials, vowing swift justice. Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra echoed the grief, calling it an “inhuman act” and demanding a thorough probe, while Aam Aadmi Party’s Arvind Kejriwal labeled it “extremely tragic.”On X (formerly Twitter), the story exploded into a trending frenzy.

Hashtags like #RedFortBlast and #LalQilaExplosion garnered millions of views within hours. Posts ranged from heartbroken tributes – “Deeply pained… prayers for the injured,” tweeted Sikkim CM Prem Singh Tamang – to raw footage of NSG teams combing the wreckage. Conspiracy theories swirled too, with some users alleging a “false flag” timed for upcoming elections, though officials urged calm and warned against rumors.

The U.S. Embassy in New Delhi offered consular support, stating it was “closely monitoring the situation.” Internationally, the blast has drawn parallels to past urban terror strikes, amplifying concerns over urban security in a city of 30 million.

Echoes of History, Shadows of Fear

The Red Fort, with its red sandstone walls and intricate Persian-Indian architecture, isn’t just a tourist magnet – it’s a living emblem of resilience.

But tonight, it became a scar on that legacy. As cleanup crews work under floodlights and families mourn, questions linger: Was this an accident, or a deliberate strike? And in a nation still healing from past wounds, how deep will this one cut?As investigations intensify, New Delhi holds its breath. Our thoughts are with the victims’ families. Stay safe, Delhi – and stay informed. Updates as they come.
