The ordeal, which unfolded in just over an hour, ended with the death of the suspect, Rohit Arya, after a tense confrontation with Mumbai Police. What began as an innocent audition for aspiring young actors spiraled into a nightmare, raising urgent questions about mental health, unpaid dues, and the fragility of public grievances.

The Setup: A Fake Audition Turns Deadly
The incident kicked off around 1:30 PM at the Mahavir Classic building in Powai, home to RA Studio – a modest space known for conducting acting classes and web series auditions. Rohit Arya, a 50-year-old employee at the studio and self-proclaimed social activist, had over the past few days been inviting children aged 8 to 15 for what he pitched as a promising opportunity in a new web series.

Around 17 boys and girls, many from nearby schools like LNT, showed up excited for their big break, accompanied by a senior citizen and another adult. But as parents waited outside for the session to wrap up during lunch break, their calls went unanswered. Panic set in when the children didn’t emerge. Desperate parents alerted the Powai Police Station at 1:45 PM, triggering a swift response from law enforcement. By the time officers arrived, Arya had barricaded the doors and windows, turning the studio into a powder keg.
The Chilling Video: “Instead of Suicide, I Chose This Plan”
Moments into the crisis, Arya uploaded a harrowing video to social media, introducing himself and laying bare his intentions. “I am Rohit Arya. Instead of dying by suicide, I have made a plan and I am holding some children hostage here,” he declared in the one-and-a-half-minute clip, his voice steady but laced with desperation. He insisted he wasn’t a terrorist or after money, but sought “simple conversations” on “moral and ethical” issues with “certain people.” Any “wrong move,” he warned, would trigger him to set the studio ablaze, harming himself and the innocent children inside. The video, which quickly went viral, echoed scenes from Bollywood thrillers like A Wednesday and A Thursday, where ordinary citizens resort to extreme measures to force accountability.

Police later confirmed Arya was armed with an air gun and unspecified chemicals, heightening the stakes. He specifically demanded to speak with former Maharashtra Education Minister Deepak Kesarkar, hinting at a deeper grievance tied to government projects.

Mumbai Police’s Swift and Decisive Response
Mumbai Police sprang into action with clockwork precision. A Quick Response Team (QRT), Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad, and fire brigade units cordoned off the area, evacuating nearby buildings in the busy commercial hub near L&T’s headquarters. Deputy Commissioner of Police Datta Nalawade led negotiations, attempting to de-escalate the situation as parents wailed outside.
For about 35 to 60 minutes, officers pleaded with Arya through the door, but he remained “adamant.” When he reportedly raised the air gun toward the children, signaling an imminent threat, the QRT made a forced entry through a bathroom window – a tactical breach that caught Arya off guard.
In the ensuing chaos, Arya allegedly fired at the police (though it was an air gun), prompting retaliatory shots. He was hit in the chest and rushed to Jogeshwari Trauma Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.”All the children have been safely rescued and handed over to their parents,” confirmed Joint Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Satyanarayan. No hostages were harmed, a testament to the force’s training and composure under pressure.

Unpaid Dues and Denied Credit: The Grievance That Exploded
As the dust settled, details emerged about Arya’s backstory, painting a picture of a man pushed to the brink by bureaucratic neglect. Rohit Arya, also a YouTuber and filmmaker, claimed to be the architect of the Maharashtra government’s “Majhi Shala, Sundar Shala” (My School, Beautiful School) initiative – a program aimed at beautifying schools and promoting cleanliness.
He alleged the concept was inspired by his short film Let’s Change and that he had been denied rightful credit and payments totaling around ₹2 crore.
Arya accused Kesarkar of issuing him two cheques – ₹7 lakh and ₹8 lakh – as “personal assistance” with promises of more, which never materialized.
He also took credit for the “Swachhta Monitor” (Cleanliness Monitor) program launched in 2023, another government effort he said was lifted from his ideas without acknowledgment.
Maharashtra Education Secretary Ranjit Singh Deol refuted claims of any formal ₹2 crore agreement, calling for an internal probe.Kesarkar, responding to the tragedy, expressed regret but defended his actions: “Rohit had a concept called Swachhta Monitor… He took money directly from the department. This matter should have been resolved through discussion.”
Police sources described Arya as “mentally unstable,” suggesting the standoff was as much a cry for help as it was a calculated protest. The Mumbai Crime Branch has taken over the investigation, scouring the scene for evidence and delving into Arya’s digital footprint.

Aftermath: A City on Edge and Calls for Accountability
The rescue operation drew widespread praise for Mumbai Police’s efficiency, but it also ignited a firestorm of criticism. Mumbai Congress president Varsha Gaikwad slammed the Mahayuti government, calling the incident a “deeply disturbing” sign of crumbling law and order that endangered children’s lives. Social media buzzed with comparisons to cinematic hostage tales, while parents recounted their horror: “We trusted the audition notice. How could this happen in broad daylight?” one mother told reporters. As Arya’s body underwent post-mortem at JJ Hospital, the incident laid bare deeper systemic issues – from mental health support for aggrieved citizens to the perils of unaddressed public grievances. Was this a lone man’s breakdown, or a symptom of a bureaucracy that ignores the little guy until it’s too late? The investigations will tell, but for now, Powai breathes a sigh of relief.
